5. Different types of hair color and associated dyes
Hair colorants can be divided into two categories: oxidizing and non-oxidizing. Oxidizing colorants significantly increase the duration of color. Depending on the durability of the color after application, there are three families of colorants: temporary, semi-permanent and permanent. The principle behind temporary and semi-permanent colorations is based on the use of coloring molecules with a strong affinity for keratin, which adsorb to the hair surface: these are direct colorants. They interact only with the cuticles and penetrate little or not at all into the hair. The duration of coloring depends mainly on the molar mass of the coloring molecule. Permanent colorations (sometimes also called semi-permanent colorations), on the other hand, are reactive, involving an oxidizing agent and oxidation dyes.
