1. Manufacturing process

1.1 Principle of the Solvay process

The Solvay process uses common salt, NaCl, and limestone, CaCO 3 , as raw materials. Ammonia NH 3 is involved in the manufacture of sodium carbonate, but cannot be considered a raw material since it is completely regenerated and recycled.

The process can be summarized by the global equation :

2 NaCl + CaCO 3 ® Na 2 CO 3 + CaCl 2
