The vast majority of applications involving lanthanides require them to be in the metallic state (pure or alloyed) or within mineral compounds, most often in oxygenated matrices such as oxides, phosphates, aluminates, carbonates (and exceptionally sulfides). These finished materials are synthesized from the raw materials described in 4 (carbonates or salts) using highly specific processes.
