2.1 Energy resources

The world's proven natural gas reserves have grown considerably over the last forty years. In 1970, they represented a quantity of exploitable energy equivalent to half the oil reserves; in the 1980s, they already represented three quarters (figure 1 ). Today, they stand at around 80%, with a much greater increase for natural gas, leading to a total proven reserve of around 180 Gtoe in 2008 (figure 2 ).
