A distinction must be made between the production of anhydrous FeCl 3 and hydrated FeCl 3 , produced and sold as a concentrated solution.
6.1 Anhydrous ferric chloride
Direct synthesis is achieved by direct attack of clean, unpolluted scrap metal with chlorine in slight excess to avoid the formation of non-volatile FeCl 2 , an intermediate compound remaining in the reactor.
