3. Aluminium chloride production
3.1 Direct aluminum chlorination
This is the most widely used process in the world today, and is used in particular by Elf Atochem at its Jarrie site (Isère).
Aluminum chloride is obtained by reacting chlorine gas in a molten aluminum bath at atmospheric pressure.
The reaction is highly exothermic and takes place at a temperature of between 700 and 800 °C :
