3.1 Adsorption isotherms
When a solute interacts with a solid surface, the interaction begins with an adsorption stage, corresponding to the formation of a Van der Waals, hydrogen or homopolar bond between the solute and the solid's crystalline surface. A distinction is made between physical and chemical adsorption, based on the nature of the adsorption isobars (adsorbed volume V a as a function of temperature T).
