Today, our societies are faced with vital issues such as a growing demand for energy, dwindling fossil fuels, and a demand for food correlated with demographic pressure. This discrepancy between "vital necessity" and "resource availability" seems inescapable, and solutions will have to be found and implemented rapidly. The chemical sciences have always taken into account, or even anticipated, the needs of society, while suffering from a perpetual image deficit. As a result, over the course of time, as both an actor and spectator of societal change, chemistry has also evolved towards increasingly complex, inter- and trans-disciplinary modes of operation, resulting in constantly evolving conceptual approaches. In this sense, it is carrying out its "permanent revolution" on a daily basis
