In the case of an electrode consisting of the metal M (solid) conjugated to the metal ion M z+ reducible to M, a metal itself oxidizable to M z+ (M z+ + z e - = M¯), and if we're dealing with a fast system, we can apply the relationship (assuming that the chemical potential of M¯ is constant):
