The purpose of this section is to define the different types of columns (from a process point of view) found in plants operating in continuous mode (these operations are more common than batch operations). Continuous operations are mainly found in the fields of specialty chemicals and petrochemicals, while batch operations are more often reserved for fine chemicals and pharmaceutical production.
