9. Calculation of crystallization plants
Crystallizer sizing is based on the three balance equations discussed in this chapter:
the material balance equation ;
the heat balance equation ;
the population balance equation.
In this paragraph, two examples of crystallizer calculations are discussed: one for batch operation, the other for continuous operation.
9.1 Discontinuous cooling crystallization
Consider a crystallizer in which ammonium perchlorate is to be batch-recrystallized in water by cooling from 50°C to 20°C.
