The alkene hydrocyanation reaction consists formally in the addition of HCN to the double bond:
In principle, this reaction is a general route to the synthesis of nitriles, hence its industrial interest. It has been applied in the case of butadiene for the synthesis of adiponitrile (Du Pont de Nemours process).
