6. Summary and conclusion

Due to the lack of standardization, SSL VPNs can differ from one SSL gateway to another. However, if we refer to a sufficiently comprehensive gateway, we can draw the following conclusions.

IPsec VPNs remain predominant for site interconnection, as the benefits of crossing firewalls are very limited compared to the latency and jitter problems of SSL VPNs (table 2 ).

On the other hand, SSL VPNs are becoming increasingly popular for mobile users, as they enable (table 3 ):

  • cross networks easily ;

  • set up intranets (access to your company's applications) and extranets (access to applications from other companies), with precise filtering of application...
