 INTRODUCTION

PostScript is indisputably the most widely used page description language today. It can be found in most commercial laser printers, in professional film printers and in some screen display systems.

Created in 1985 by Adobe Inc, PostScript has contributed to the revolution in the publishing and printing professions, and brought professional print quality to all laser printer users. Virtually all printed matter today (books, posters, magazines, leaflets, etc.) uses the PostScript format.

PostScript has evolved in parallel with printer technology and user requirements. PostScript level 1 only handled solid colors on black-and-white printers; level 2 gave access to full color, while level 3 now enables the printing of very rich graphics with complex gradients.
