5. Scheduling

The specificity of real time is that the execution of an application's tasks must respect time constraints dictated by the dynamics of the process they drive or control. The general problem of "scheduling" consists, for a given application, in determining the policy for allocating tasks on the execution media (processors, controllers) in such a way as to guarantee these temporal constraints, and then implementing this policy.

  • This implementation consists in determining the mechanism to be integrated into the executive, which will enable it to decide on the order of tasks to be executed as the application evolves, i.e. when the events emitted by the process are observed. This mechanism is called a scheduler.
