8. Decimal coding
The aim of coding the decimal system is to provide accurate decimal calculations, without the rounding errors that are inevitable when values expressed in base 10 have to be represented using the binary system.
8.1 Binary-coded decimal
Binary-coded decimal involves encoding the digits 0 to 9 on 4 bits (table 5 ).
