The EA fields of application are extremely varied, and involve researchers and engineers from a wide range of disciplines.

Numerical optimization: when the functions to be optimized are complex, of large dimensions, irregular or poorly known.
Combinatorial optimization: for graph-theoretic problems (travelling salesman, graph coloring), task sequencing, resource allocation, scheduling, backpacking, whose efficient resolution is most often based on AEs hybridized with "classical" techniques.
