This example shows that for two very different modalities, hearing and vision, it is possible to have the same mode of information processing, with semantic representations expressing the perceptual result.

Sound from the eardrum is transmitted to the basilar membrane inside the cochlea, where receptor cilia perceive the vibration and translate the information into neural signals.
