The need to reduce throughput for storage or transport makes it inevitable to use various compression tools along the chain. The resulting throughput is not the only criterion for choosing these tools. The compression ratio applied, and therefore the efficiency of the compression algorithm, as well as the number of decompression/compression cascades performed along the chain are just as important. This huge diversity of compression formats, combined with the wide range of container formats used in capture, post-production, distribution and display, will make it difficult to establish a homogeneous HD chain
