5G is the fifth generation of mobile communications, following on from 2G, 3G and 4G technologies (figure

), the former allowing only voice calls and then the sending of SMS, the latter offering new uses: connecting to the Internet, accessing applications, making video calls, consulting or editing media, and so on.
