2. Standard AES42
In 2001, AES published a new standard under the number AES42. It is entitled Digital Microphone Interface and is based on the AES3 standard, which it complements in the upward direction. It enables the equipment receiving the AES3 stream from the digital microphone to send commands and power back to the microphone. Although this standard refers to a microphone as the source of the AES3 stream, it can also be applied to other equipment that provides an AES3 source, but needs to be powered from the other end of the cable and receive commands (for example, to modify its configuration).
