Neighborhood discovery is a mechanism that enables each sensor to establish a list of other sensors within radio range (its neighbors). This step is very important in the life of a network, since most higher-level algorithms (routing, scheduling, etc.) rely on the neighbor tables built by these algorithms.
Neighborhood discovery is traditionally achieved by periodically sending a HELLO message. On receiving such a message from sensor v, sensor u learns of v's existence as a neighbor and enters it into its neighborhood table, or updates the corresponding entry if v already appears there.
