1. The name service
The "name service", hereafter referred to as DNS, can be seen (in simplified terms) as a simple database that links an IP address with a name and vice versa. Each name is attached to a domain name (called a zone). There is no limit to the number of zones and the number of objects they can contain, allowing an infinite number of entities to have their own private zone.

Presentation
To function, the DNS service relies on servers. Each of them is the authority on a zone, and can delegate this authority to all or part of its sub-zones. For those wishing to know more about the inner workings of DNS, please refer to Gilles Guette's article
