2. Multi-hop networks
The ad hoc mode of 802.11 allows distributed access to the radio medium and does not require the intervention of a specific entity, such as an access point. Two mobiles within radio communication range can therefore communicate directly using this mode.

This is referred to as one-hop radio communication. This mode can therefore be used in multi-hop wireless networks, which enjoyed a resurgence of interest in the mid-1990s .
In these networks, the communication range of the wireless equipment determines the network structure.
