6. Conclusion

This article presents a number of performances obtained with the use of 802.11, and in particular the DCF communication mode of 802.11 in different wireless LAN configurations. These include single-hop and multi-hop wireless networks. Characteristic performances and a number of problems are presented and discussed. These mainly concern low data rates for some stations, as well as short-term inequality in access to the radio medium.

It's important to remember that the 802.11 standard was essentially developed for wireless networks with infrastructure, and that the ad hoc communication mode (DCF mode) proposed in this standard was not initially intended for multi-hop wireless networks.
