3. Using the reflectometer for characterization

After describing the operation and performance of OTDRs, this chapter looks at the optimum use of the device.

3.1 Preparation

A poor optical connection in terms of reflectance, and/or insertion loss between the OTDR and the network or fiber to be tested, is highly detrimental to the quality of the measurements obtained.
