3. Military-specific technologies
While civilian technologies are widely used by military telecoms systems, the latter have a number of specific technical features linked to their particular constraints, giving them technical leadership in several areas (see following paragraphs).
3.1 Use of the open wireless environment
Military radio communications use HF and VHF radio channels, whose relatively low frequencies (a few tens of megahertz at best) and targeted ranges make link balancing a delicate matter, depending on the conditions of use in the field (electronic warfare). These transmission channels, with bit rates mostly below 10 kbit/s, "naturally" have a high bit error rate (sometimes less than 10 –3 ).
