2. A few reminders about the TCP protocol

This section describes a few principles of TCP protocol operation that are useful for the purposes of this article.

The article [TE 7 570] describes in more detail the basic operation of the TCP protocol, including retransmission and congestion control mechanisms.

Firstly, TCP uses a procedure known as 3WHS (3-way Handshake) to establish a connection between two TCP terminals. Bits (called "flags") are set in a TCP segment to indicate the nature of the segment to the remote terminal:
