Overview
ABSTRACT
The Release 8 is the first version of the EPS system (Evolved Packet System), based on a flat achitecture. It is notably characterized by the introduction of the E-UTRAN (Evolved UTRAN) access network and the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network. Just as the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) which was in its time retro-compatible with the already deployed systems, the EPS interfaces with the UMTS system. furthermore, The International Telecommunication Union has set the specifications for the 4th generation of mobile radiocommunications under the name of IMT-Advanced and included, beyond various technical characteristics, the obligation of a global roaming and interoperability with the existing access networks.

INTRODUCTION
The second part of this dossier covers UMTS Release 8 and introduces the migration to the new Evolved Packet System (EPS).
The EPS system is based on a flat "all-IP" architecture and OFDMA radio interface, marking a turning point compared with the WCDMA radio interface and circuit domain of the UMTS system. The EPS Advanced Packet Core (EPC) network interconnects with the new E-UTRAN access network, as well as with existing access networks (UTRAN, WLAN, cdma 2000 and WiMax Mobile), ensuring backward compatibility. The first chapter of this second part presents the main features.
The 4th generation of mobile radio systems (4G) is introduced in the second chapter, in particular the LTE-Advanced evolution proposed by 3GPP as a candidate for the IMT-Advanced standard whose specifications have been set by the International Telecommunication Union.
