Overview
ABSTRACT
This article describes the main principles of contactless energy transfer. After a short review of various options of wireless energy transfer, the article focuses on the magnetic coupling transfer for automotive charging in medium power applications. The article deals with the modeling of a large air gap coupler. Different compensation modes are then analyzed and compared. A pre-dimensioning method for the coupler is proposed, based on simple finite element simulations. The coupler is designed and included in a DC-DC topology with series-series resonance. The whole system was studied and a 20 kW prototype made and successfully tested.

INTRODUCTION
Non-contact energy transfer, or wireless energy transfer, is a generic term for a variety of techniques for transferring electrical energy remotely, without a physical link, from a transmitting device (or transmitting antenna) to a receiving device (or receiving antenna). This type of energy transfer can take various forms: magnetic induction, electrical influence, electromagnetic radiation (radio waves, microwaves, infrared laser) .
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) has applications in a wide range of fields, from mobile electronics (charging smartphones, laptops, tablets, GPS, etc.), to the transport sector (cars, buses, streetcars, etc.), to active medical implants (pacemakers, defibrillators, hearing aids, insulin pumps, brain valves, etc.). In these applications, the electrical energy transmitted is used to charge a battery. WPT is also used in heating systems :
electromagnetic induction heating of metals and semiconductor materials in the fields of metallurgy and mechanics (crucible melting furnaces, heating before forming, surface heat treatment), chemistry (direct melting of glasses and oxides, etc.), and consumer applications (kitchen hotplates);
microwave radiation heating (microwave oven) ;
infrared heating in the home (radiators, infrared panels).
