6. Exposure limit values
Exposure limits based on the tolerable induced current density in the human body for EBF (up to 10 kHz) and on SAR for RF and microwave frequencies (from 10 kHz to 300 GHz) have been laid down at international and European level. Compliance with these values normally protects against accidents caused by excessively strong fields. However, these values still need to be respected, hence the need for field measurements to ensure that they are not exceeded.
When these values must be exceeded for maintenance purposes (proximity of antennas, applicators, radars, etc.), it is essential to provide appropriate means of prevention or procedures to protect personnel.
Below these limit values, i.e. for low field strengths, the results of various experimental studies show no clearly harmful effects of fields on health.
