Efforts to maximize the voltage of a battery begin with optimizing the negative electrode using a strongly reducing material, which initially led to the application of lithium metal. The reaction that happens at this negative electrode on discharge can be written according to the half-equation:

Li \to {Li}^{+} + e^{-} E = - 3,0 V v s SHE
