2. Submarine and underwater cables
2.1 General
These cables are used to cross rivers, to supply power to islands close to the mainland, or to interconnect islands. They can be AC or DC, depending on the economic cost of energy transmission (figure 1 ).
Sub-river and especially submarine cables share a number of specific problems, linked to manufacturing, storage, installation, the environment and possible repairs. Two examples of cables are shown in figures 4...
