5. Non-regular windings

Up to now, we've considered regular windings, i.e. windings whose pattern is repeated identically for all poles and phases. These are the most frequently used. However, for reasons of cost or manufacturing requirements (e.g. very high-polarity machines), it can be advantageous to use non-regular windings, such as those with holes or a fractional number of notches per pole and phase.

5.1 Hole windings

In order to shorten the average length of the windings, and thus save copper, windings can be produced in a single plane with a shortened pitch by means of holes in the phases.

The term "hole" actually means that the conductors of a phase for a pole do not occupy all-consecutive notches. In this case, the phases are partially interleaved....
