6. Economic aspects of supercapacitor development

6.1 Benefits of the supercapacitor

Over the last few decades, capacitor performance has improved in two areas of application:

  • low-pass filtering, designed to provide high-value DC power supplies for choppers or inverters, where the filtering is such that voltage ripple is low despite sudden variations in the current delivered. Capacitors with capacities of 2,000 μF or even 5,000 μF are commonly used;

  • obtaining a current phase shift as close as possible to 90° to supply a machine or network with reactive power.
