 INTRODUCTION

Static converters, like direct-current machines (dcms), are a fundamental link in variable-speed drive systems. Static converters for DCMs are very specific and can be classified into two main families:

  • that operating from the alternating current network;

  • that supplied by a DC voltage source, possibly created by rectification from the mains.

This article describes the main reversible and non-reversible structures, their static characteristics and their dynamic modeling.

Discontinuous conduction phenomena highlight a strong coupling between the machine and the converter, leading to non-linearities that are mentioned but not dealt with here.

Finally, the main architectures of the current and speed control structures of these variable-speed drives are presented.

This article is the second in a series dedicated to the control of direct current (dc) machines:

  • Synthesis of mcc regulations: methods [D 3 613] ;

  • mcc regulations: problems and modeling [D 3 614] ;

  • Control of variable-speed DC machines. Find out more [Doc. D 3 615].
