4. Aging of insulators under the effect of the electric field

As we saw in paragraph 2 , the application of a high electric field to an insulator leads to instantaneous breakdown of the material. However, the application of an electric field lower than the disruptive field can lead to progressive material degradation, usually ending in destructive and irreversible breakdown.
