INTRODUCTION
More than half of the electrical energy produced in industrialized countries is converted into mechanical energy by motors. Most of these are of one of the following types: direct current, asynchronous, synchronous or commutator alternating current. It is generally estimated that asynchronous motors account for 70% of installed power, and absorb 40-50% of total energy consumption. Even if these figures are imprecise, they demonstrate the importance of this type of equipment.
The following text is intended to provide an outline of the operation of asynchronous machines under steady-state conditions. It does not claim to exhaust the subject, as the problems posed by testing and loss analysis have been overlooked.
On the other hand, we have detailed the application characteristics, which should be widely known and which enable us to distinguish between possible and impossible operations.
The article will be supplemented by a second section devoted to transitional regimes.
