1.1 Origin of electricity
Electricity is produced by transforming mechanical energy using generators, which are driven by various means:
steam turbines powered by thermal energy from coal or liquid fuels;
hydraulic turbines using the energy of waterfalls ;
steam turbines using the heat released by atomic decay in nuclear power plants.
Only the last two forms of production are economically viable, as the first involves a double transformation of the thermal energy of the fuels, making it more expensive.
