Grey energy
Quantity of energy required to produce a material or product at different stages: design, extraction, transport and transformation of raw materials, manufacturing, recycling. A building's embodied energy is the sum of the embodied energies of its constituent products.
Usage energy
Primary energy consumed by the building, for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, lighting and all associated circuits and motors (auxiliaries).
Primary energy
Energy consumption takes into account the energy used to produce, transform and transport it to the building, while final energy only covers that consumed by the user and recorded on the meter. For example, in France, electricity is equivalent to 1 in final energy but 2.58 in primary energy.
