4. Search for an optimized reinforcement solution

4.1 Defining an acceptable level of performance

The decision to reinforce and the performance targets to be achieved for the reinforced structure are to be considered on the basis of a realistic cost/benefit analysis incorporating parameters such as :

  • the socio-economic value of the project;

  • remaining useful life ;

  • possible reinforcements and their costs.

  • For an existing structure that has not been earthquake-proofed, achieving a compliance index equal to 1 (resistance to 100% of the regulatory earthquake level for which the structure would have been designed had it been a new build) is generally not a wise choice....
