10. Conclusion

Examination of structures affected by deterioration of the concrete covering the reinforcement reveals that the damage almost always results from the thickness of the covering being too thin and/or the concrete being defective, porous and of low strength.

Reinforced concrete corrosion is currently the most costly pathology for the community. Observations and studies have shown that reinforcement durability depends, first and foremost, on the use of compact concrete with a suitable coating thickness. Concrete prepared with mineral additions (blast furnace slag, fly ash, silica fume, fillers) generally limits the diffusion of chlorine ions.

Modern approaches are no longer based on simple compressive strength as an indicator of durability, but on approaches in which the material's characteristics are defined in relation to a given service life...
