Currently, more than half of the construction projects could be optimised for more coordination and avoid defects and errors. In addition, communication between the project stakeholders is often lacking due to the compartmentalization of trades.

The concept of Building 4.0, from Industry 4.0, offers users more comfort and safety while providing new opportunities for companies wishing to increase their competitiveness, the quality of their work, the respect of deadlines and the new services offered to clients.

 INTRODUCTION

According to the UN, the world's population will increase by 2.5 billion by 2050. Building professionals will therefore have to cope with an explosion in demand for good-quality, low-cost, environmentally-friendly housing, and so on. The need for private and public infrastructure in cities will also increase rapidly.

To meet this challenge, the construction industry must transform itself. This transformation necessarily involves the industrialization of the sector, enabling a sharp improvement in productivity and efficiency thanks to digitization, innovative technologies from Industry 4.0 and new techniques for designing, constructing and operating the built environment. This is the concept of Construction 4.0.

The aim of this article is to provide readers interested in Building 4.0 with an overview of the issues, concepts, technologies and impact of this industrial revolution on the building industry.

The article is divided into three complementary parts:

  • An introductory section outlining the issues and challenges facing the building industry today, and the need for industrialization;

  • a second part explaining what we mean by Building 4.0 ;

  • a third section reviewing the various methodologies, tools and technologies that will enable us to set up Building 4.0
