2.1 Definitions and benefits
A tram-train is a tramway which, with certain technical adaptations, is able to run on the tramway tracks of an urban network and on those of a rail network where there are traditional train services for passengers and goods. The formula is not new, having first appeared in the USA and Canada at the beginning of the 20th century, where the spectacular development of intercity tramways, often subsidiaries of railway companies, led to the use of general-interest railroads between certain towns, particularly in sparsely populated areas.
