5. Conclusion and outlook
Degradation and wear of road surfaces are the result of a number of phenomena that occur during the life of the pavement. The causes are numerous, and the modes of deterioration vary according to these causes. Mechanical and thermal stresses are the main causes of pavement deterioration, and must be taken into account during the pavement design phase and when selecting pavement components. The construction phase also has a major impact on pavement durability. Proper compaction of granular or bound layers, bonding of asphalt layers and proper execution of joints are important conditions for a durable road offering comfort and safety to users. Special attention must therefore be paid to all these phenomena during the pavement design and construction phases.
