3.1 Areas of application

The presence of compressible materials on earthworks sites calls for specific geotechnical tests to be carried out in situ or on soil samples, in order to best estimate the influence of compressible soils on the future structure, particularly with regard to the expected and permissible settlements of these foundation soils, the risks of failure of the structure itself, and the disorders caused to neighboring buildings.
