4. Finite element discretization
The finite element displacement formulation consists of discretizing the displacement field t u i as a function of the nodal displacements t q k . This discretization makes it possible to formulate the element matrices for writing the algebraic system of incremental equilibrium at the structure level.
4.1 Virtual strain variation
In the total Lagrangian description, the element matrices are calculated by the virtual variation of the deformation which is expressed as a function of that of the nodal displacements in the form :
