INTRODUCTION
Since their behavior and modes of failure are different, this article deals separately and successively with tensioned and compressed components.
In each case, the definition of the component is given, and its field of use and modes of failure are described. Connections are vital elements of any steel construction, and are therefore the subject of a specific paragraph. Behavioral requirements and economic criteria are summarized in a paragraph devoted to design. Examples are used to illustrate and apply the various concepts introduced.
