 INTRODUCTION

Some interpret this as a sign of non-modernity, while others see it as the evolution of a century-old industry that has been able to adapt to progress. By considering the quality — in the broad sense — of the structures built, we can try to compare the different construction sectors. It's easy to see that steel construction is a more than respectable figure in the overall picture.

To this end, we present a numerical overview of the metal construction company, and explain how it fits into the chain of participants in the act of building. We then describe the models by which it organizes itself as an industrial enterprise, and how the latest developments in materials, means of production, information technology and standardization are influencing its future.

Having done this, we will return to the advantages and disadvantages — sometimes assumed or overestimated — of steel, in the light of the methods and products available today. Among these aspects, the qualification or certification of companies will be the subject of particular development.
