4. Device configurations

4.1 Sheath

The shaft must be reserved exclusively for elevator use.

The dimensions of the shaft, width and depth, are determined by the dimensions of the cab, which increase with the admissible load, and by the type of door used.

An elevator must be isolated from its environment by a space that can be :

  • enclosed by walls, floor and ceiling (fully enclosed duct);

  • sufficient clearance between moving parts of the elevator or its safety devices and areas normally accessible to people (partially enclosed shaft).
